How does CFCWR use citizen science?
Right now, we are collaborating with volunteer scientists (this could be you!) across the U.S. to collect information about household food waste and food behaviors. We will use the data to find connections between food behaviors that conserve food and those that contribute to waste.
In the future, we will have a data dashboard where you can see how your household compares with others in the U.S. Plus, we will have opportunities for you to co-create new research questions, projects, and solutions to help people conserve food and reduce waste.
Want to be a citizen scientist?
Get started by learning about food waste in your home. Use our tracking logs to see how much food gets thrown out in your home.
Consider buying a digital kitchen scale if you don’t already have one – you can find several options for under $20. This can help in determining your total food waste.
Follow these steps to get started:
- Download the Food Waste Audit Instructions.
- Start with the Kitchen Waste Audit to identify food and beverages that are unlikely to be eaten.
- Once this is done, use our Daily Food Waste Log for at least 4 days to see how much food is going to waste (and why!) in your home.
- Identify areas where your household could do better at managing your food. Check out our tips for reducing food waste or try new ideas that you think will work well for you!
- Track your progress and share your experience (what works well and what doesn’t) with us!
