Recycling food waste would bring huge benefits, but microplastics a challenge

Researchers from the University of Vermont found that diverting U.S. food waste from landfills to composting and anaerobic digestion could reduce related climate impacts by up to 99%. However, it comes with a warning — without proactive interventions, this practice could release approximately 20,000 tons of microplastics into agricultural soils each year.
