Obesity and Food Waste: Is there a Connection?

Obesity and food waste are both significant societal problems. In this research review published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, the authors considered the connection between these two “wicked” problems. The authors explained how some efforts to reduce food waste can have unintended negative consequences related to obesity risk and vice versa. They suggested a “systems thinking” approach such that solutions to these complex problems be considered holistically, evaluating the pros and cons of changes to the system. The article includes a comprehensive list of strategies to conserve food and reduce waste while minimizing obesity risks. The strategies are categorized by supply chain stage, making it easy for consumers, food-related professionals, and policymakers to identify action items most relevant to them.
